ESSAY 19: SOCIETY –
GOVERNMENT’S ROLE IN ABORIGINAL ISSUES
Common Sense does not reinvent the wheel. We’ve outsourced Essay 19 to men of aboriginal heritage: Mr Nyunggai Warren Mundine and Mr Anthony Dillon.
Mundine’s and Dillon’s Essay, entitled “Mindset of action must replace symbolic gestures”, was first published in The Australian on 20 July 2022. It is our pick of the most hardhitting – and potentially impactful – journalism by our nation’s Fourth Estate during the month of July 2022. Well done Warren and Anthony!
We commend the article in its entirety. It is relatively brief. Its authors succeed in offering “some ideas here that reflect a new mindset”.
The Further Reading listed further below, includes Letters to the Editor published in The Australian, in the days following Warren’s and Anthony’s article.
Common Sense opposes the proposal in the Uluru Statement from the Heart for the establishment of a “First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution”.
This is not out of any lack of concern for fellow Australians: As observed in Essay 1 “Proposals for differential voting rights for aboriginal people overlook the question, as to why most of the 1189 staff of our National Indigenous Australians Agency are based in Canberra, rather than living in aboriginal communities.”
